Folkloric Productions
The mission of Folkloric Productions school program is to teach students about multicultural dances from countries all over the world. For CSAT, Ms. Skora chose the Samba, as it is the easiest dance for students to connect with because of its easy rhythm and entertaining movements.
The students at CSAT first began learning about the importance of stretching every body part before the dancing began. Ms. Skora then taught each portion of the routine separately; adding on another movement only after the prior had been mastered. The routine was practiced repeatedly, to give every student the chance to learn the rhythm and movement of the Samba.
Once students learned the full dance, they then broke into small groups. Each group developed their own identity – a group name, home country, and a finalizing piece to the Samba routine. The students performed the routine group by group, adding their own endings as a unique part of the performance.
A special portion of the entertainment was provided by Cameron Sampson, Israel Taylor, Frank Giordano, and Nathaniel Mercado. During each group’s performance, these four individuals played the rhythm of the Samba music with their drumsticks, adding an individual affect to the dancing. Ms. Skora was pleased that these boys could connect to the music on this level, as she stated, “Every student can find a connection in the performance, even if it is not in the dancing.”
The students of CSAT Boys and Girls Club were extremely excited to be a part of the special program offered by Cathy Skora of Folkloric Productions. Each student had a special talent to offer to the routine to make it a memorable experience for everyone.
