Book Buddies at CSAT Boys and Girls Club
“I like it because I like to read.” These are the words of kindergartener Mi’Kaila Williams who eagerly awaits having an older student read aloud to her. Kindergarten group leader Samantha Kessler emphasizes that her children are benefiting from the program by having an opportunity to learn from other students, rather than teachers or other adults. The older students are also feeling positive benefits from the Book Buddies program. Seventh grader Greggory Hart states, “It’s fun for the little kids to look up to us.” They are able to better themselves by acting as role models for the younger students.
On this past Thursday, Book Buddies met to read a number of books, including Sara Riches, “Fat Frogs on a Skinny Log” and “Snakes” by Carolyn MacLucich. Among the older students to read aloud to the whole group were Greggory Hart, Casey Boldt, Krista Boldt, Iyanna Taylor, Kieran Kropidlowski, Brandon Elerag, and Jamia Jones. Jamia commented that she liked reading to the younger children because, “They are good and pay attention.” The students work together to create a positive educational atmosphere for both groups, while engaging in fun and enjoyable interaction.
Book buddies continue to meet every Thursday. Students are either paired one-on-one, or one older student reads aloud to the whole group while his or her peers sit side-by-side with the younger children. Both groups are gaining the mutual rewards from the program and look forward to continue working together throughout the year at the CSAT Boys and Girls Club.
